Demi laughed loudly as Alex asked about her ex “You can kick his ass if you want but seriously, it just fizzled out. There’s only so much you can do with a relationship that’s going nowhere .. Uh, excuse me” Demi called over the waitress and ordered a lime soda and bottle of beer for Alex. “Yeah, so. It just fizzled. I dont know, he was really sweet but.. then our saucy bedroom pictures got leaked and that was great!” She laughed again. The pictures leaking just didn’t bother her as much as she thought it would.Honestly, she just didn’t really care anymore. She had had enough of drama in her life and she was done caring about what other people think.

Listening to Alex speak, she smiled. Demi loved his dogs, she was completely in love with the both of them and she was happy to know they were doing okay. When he started talking about Lisa, she started paying full attention, nearly choking on her drink when he mentioned Warped tour. Knowing he had gone back to her after everything that happened made her mad, why Lisa? Of all the people to go to, why the one person you were trying to avoid? Demi cleared her throat and faked a big smile. “Ah, thank you. I got bored of dying it so i went all natural again. The shaved thing happened on my tour bus, I don’t even know why. Your hair still looks great even though you haven’t listened to my suggestion of bringing the blonde back” She raised her eyebrows and picked up her glass, bringing the straw to her lips and having a sip.

Alex raised his eyebrow when Demi mentioned a few pictures getting leaked. “Yeah I think I saw a few websites talking about that, I’m sorry it must suck. But what do we learn from this? Keep your cameras away when you’re doing it. Listen to your master, Demi.” Alex chuckled and gave her a strict nod to emphasize his joke. He felt bad that someone would have the nerves to invade her privacy like that, but Demi seemed to have gotten used to it by now. Alex admired her for how professionally she handled issues that came with the job now, back in the day he could always tell that it was overwhelming her.

Alex looked at Demi, trying to figure out how she felt about him being back with Lisa. She didn’t say anything about it, which confused Alex a little but he was okay with it. “Ah yes that sounds a lot like you. I like it! But I’ve seen a few pictures and you’ve pretty much looked good with any hair colour so… Unlike me who, by the way will not go back to blond. It just made me look a lot like Surfer Ken and I think I’m a little too old for that haha.” Alex laughed and watched Demis lips wrapped around the straw, his eyes traveled down to her chest for just a second, the shirt she was wearing didn’t reveal much but it was enough to tempt him to look.

As Alex came nearer towards her, she was pulled into a tight hug and she wrapped her arms around his back in response. It was nice to hug him, she hadn’t seen him for so long she had forgotten what it was like to hug him. “Don’t worry about it, you’re here now right”. Demi sat down in her seat and took a sip of her drink, looking up at Alex sitting opposite her. “I’ve been okay I guess. The tour was great, it was nice to play every night. To be honest, the most that’s changed about me is my hair” Demi laughed quietly, and ran her fingers through the ends of her hair subconsciously. “You know.. there was a guy.. but it just ran it’s course . He was cool, he was a nice guy and I liked him but we just didn’t, I don’t know, there were no sparks” She shrugged and took another sip of her drink. “What about you? how are the dogs? Tell me about Lisa.. I want to know everything!”

Looking at Alex from across the table, he looked older than he did. But, a lot of things had changed since the last time they had seen each other, stuff she probably didn’t know about. His hair was exactly the same„ it only ever grew a little bit longer before he would cut it again. It made Demi laugh, she used to love teasing him about how long he would take getting ready. As he spoke, she wanted him to talk for a while because, honestly, she just liked hearing him speak. He always had something to say and she always found it interesting.

Alex listened to Demi talk, he tried to be as open as possible towards what she would tell him. When she mentioned that there had been a guy but they were no longer together, Alex couldn’t help but feel a little less tense. He wouldn’t have been devastated if Demi was in a relationship but it was easier being here knowing he wouldn’t have to listen to her talk about how sweet her new LA boyfriend was or something like that. “Ah well, you’re young you’ll find someone! He didn’t like screw you over did he right? You know I’m always ready to kick some ass!” Alex chuckled and looked down at his beer before drinking some of it.

"Ah yes… The dogs are good, really good. And yeah uh I don’t know it just kinda happened, I was in Baltimore for a while after Warped we spent together and she and I kinda hung out more and we’re back together. It’s been on and off ever since though, the usual. I took her to LA with me, thought it would maybe help getting away from home for a while but of course it didn’t. Whatever, it’s cool." Alex shrugged, giving Demi a bittersweet smile. He was used to Lisa being moody and off at the most random times, but he couldn’t deny that it was pissing him off. "I like the hair." Alex said all of a sudden, he didn’t really know how much about Lisa Demi wanted to hear.

Demi stood in her bedroom with nothing but her underwear on. It was 8:35 and she was panicking, knowing that if she wasn’t quick she would be seriously late. Picking up a black skirt from the floor, and a white Nirvana tank, she slipped them on before sitting down on her bed and putting on her favorite heels. Her hair was down and she pulled it to one side, showing off the shaved part of her head. She did that on a whim, something exciting and different while she was on tour. Demi grabbed her bag and car keys and ran to her car and before she knew it she was there.

The clock in her car said 8:59, so she opened the door and stepped out. There was no paparazzi for the first time in a while and it felt good to walk to a bar or store without getting photographed. Inside, she ordered a lime soda and sat at a booth, fluffing her hair a little and breathing deeply. Alex was late, but she didn’t care, it gave her more time to breathe and relax. Turning round, she saw Alex standing in the doorway and she stood up, waving awkwardly at him. Demi felt a lot calmer now she had actually seen Alex’s face band she smiled as he came close. “Hey! I was beginning to think you had stood me up!”

Before Alex knew it, Demi had spotted him. There was no way back now, he had to face her. As he walked towards her, Alex smiled and opened his arms to pull her into a hug like he usually would with a friend. “Nah sorry I was stuck in traffic.” Although it was a lie, Alex knew it was way better than saying what really had held him back- the thought of not coming. Ordering himself a beer, Alex sat down at the table Demi had chosen. He felt a little more calm now that he was actually here, after all him and her were no strangers.

"So, how have you been? Anything cool happening with work or a guy or something?" Alex took a sip from his beverage and looked up at Demi. He wondered what went through her head, what she thought about him now, his appearance, the way he was living his life. She used to be honest with him, back in the day she’d make sure he knew she hated an item of clothing he was wearing or anything like that. But things had changed, he felt like every day they had spent apart had distanced them from eachother a little more.

“Yeah she’s a cool lady” Demi smiled awkwardly. Talking about her grandmother wasn’t really something she wanted to discuss with him, everything felt a little forced. It had been such a long time since she has seen him and she had more important things to say to him, things she wasn’t sure she wanted to say and Demi was certain that he had some things to say to her.

She knew Alex wouldn’t have kept her number but her heart still sunk a little bit hearing him say it. Demi couldn’t deny that he was right to do it though, no one wants an ex in their phone book. Alex looked good though and seeing him so suddenly made her miss him, a feeling she hadn’t felt in a while. “Yeah cool, okay. Can I?..” She took his phone and typed her number and name before handing it back to him. “Just text or call whenever you’re free or feel like meeting. I’m off work for a few weeks now so I’ll be in the city”. Demi quickly glanced at Alex again, taking in his hair and his eyes and the way he stood. It was all so familiar to her and she smiled up at him, happy that they bumped into each other in such a strange way. “So.. I have to go and eat these bagels. I guess I’ll see you soon?” Unsure of whether to hug him or shake his hand, she decided against neither and smiled at him once more. “Okay.. Bye”. Demi walked past him, quickly glancing back before making her way to the cashier and the awaiting paparazzi outside.

Alex watched Demi type her number into his phone, for a second they stood there in awkward silence and Alex took the time to look at her one more time. He wondered if she had someone else now, he had seen a few pictures online that were obviously meant for someone, a boyfriend. Alex shouldn’t have been that surprised about her being with a new guy, she was beautiful, hilarious, just a great person and it was bound to happen. Still, something inside him didn’t feel too well thinking about things like that. “Sure I’ll uh, I’ll give you a call.”

When Alex had told Demi he’d call her at the grocery shop only three hours ago, neither of them had expected him to do so that quickly. After Demi had left the shop, Alex had done the same, made his way home quickly and cooked, leaving the leftovers in the fridge for his girlfriend since she was nowhere to be found. While walking his dogs, Alex got the idea of calling Demi right now rather than waiting a couple of days, so he did. They agreed to meet at a local bar at nine, and the minute Alex hung up the phone he felt nervosity running through his body.

It was now 8:30. Texting Lisa he was “out with the guys”, Alex changed into a dark red shirt and some dark jeans, combining them with a pair of converse. He ran his hand through his hair and along his cheeks, wondering if he should shave but he decided not to. No matter how much he made himself look like he did three years ago, things would never go back to the way they were. Alex knew that, he just needed to remind himself now and then. Grabbing his leather jacket, he quickly made his way out and into his car. The drive to the bar didn’t take him too long but still, he was fifteen minutes late. Hoping Demi wouldn’t be too mad at him, he walked to the way from his car to the bar and stood outside for a minute. Taking a deep breath, he talked himself out of leaving again several times before opening the door.

The Past is the past

Alex smiled listening to Demi talk about her life, everything sounded alot calmer and it seemed that she had control over where her career was going. He liked that a lot, knowing she had always hated how people made decisions for her rather than letting her do what she wanted. “Oh I didn’t know…

"It’s okay Demi don’t worry about it. Your grandma is probably a nice lady, deserves seeing you a lot more than I do.." Alex smiled slightly, part of him wished Demi would have come to the concert. They could’ve been friends a lot earlier again, or maybe Alex was just lying to himself about them ever being able to develop a friendship.

He saw the expression on Demi’s face when he dropped the Lisa bomb. He had told Demi about her multiple times, had complained about her bad sides. Alex didn’t really know why he was back together with her, most of the time she just got on his nerves. But he wouldn’t let Demi know that, she didn’t have to know that he hadn’t been in a proper, healthy relationship ever since she had left. “Yep, Lisa from high school. We got back together a while ago.” He smiled reassuringly, not knowing how to handle this rather awkward situation.
"That sounds nice, I uh. You’ll have to give me your number, I don’t have it anymore. Got a new phone and stuff." Alex mumbled, fishing his phone out of the pocket of his jeans. He looked up at Demi once more, her hair was darker again and she had shaved a side of it off, it looked cute and made Alex chuckle. She seemed healthy and quite happy, but Demi had fooled him about her health before so he made sure to pay attention to her words and behavior. Even though they weren’t even friends again yet, the need to protect her and make sure she was alright never really left Alex. Not even when he saw a magazine making fun of her, he always got a little mad when that happened.

The Past is the past

Demi smiled, and looked up at him. Without her normal high heels on she was tiny compared to him which was something he had always joked about, and as her eyes met him she dropped her gaze, feeling slightly uncomfortable. It felt a little weird seeing him in such a normal surrounding - she had at least expected in the studio or at a gig but not in a bread aisle. “Good, I’m glad. I actually had tickets to one of your shows, but I had to go to Texas and I couldn’t go. Are you here working on a new album?” Demi genuinely loved Alex’s music and his band. Truth be told she missed them all, and she was curious to how the rest of his band mates were. “Yeah, X Factor. Well I quit so now I won’t be on it anymore, I decided to focus on music and stuff”. Demi looked at him again and laughed, “Are your dogs on a meat free diet now? Tell them they’re beautiful the way they are, they don’t need to lose any weight okay”. She knew he was hiding something, probably some beautiful model girlfriend and it hurt her a little that he thought he had to keep that from her. However, her thoughts changed quickly at his last sentence. “you uh, you wanna hang out with me?” She was surprised, she thought she would be the last person Alex would want to see. “Yeah.. Okay. Let’s hang out some time. We can maybe get a drink or something”

Alex smiled listening to Demi talk about her life, everything sounded alot calmer and it seemed that she had control over where her career was going. He liked that a lot, knowing she had always hated how people made decisions for her rather than letting her do what she wanted. “Oh I didn’t know you quit, but I can imagine what you mean. And I wish you had come, we still suck as a band but having you there would’ve been cool!” Alex wondered if Demi really had been to Texas when they played their show, something told him she hadn’t.

"Nah they’re confident about their curves, rocking those hips. It’s uh.. they’re for Lisa." He spoke the last bit of his sentence quickly, trying not to draw too much focus to the fac that he was back with her. "Yes of course I do, it’s been too long. A drink or two, sounds perfect. We have a lot to talk about I guess.." Alex hadn’t forgotten the past, he still had a lot he wanted her to explain but he wasn’t angry at her anymore.
